Prayer Companion
Forty short prayers for messy moments — grief, anger, doubt, joy, and the ordinary in-between
These are not polished prayers. They're the kind you pray in a parked car, at a kitchen sink, in a hospital hallway. Borrow them word-for-word, or use them as a running start for your own. God has heard worse grammar and loved every syllable.
For Grief
1. When the loss is freshGod, it hurts too much to say much. Just stay close. You collect tears in a bottle — collect mine today. Amen.
2. When everyone else has moved onLord, the casseroles stopped coming but the grief didn't. Be the friend who stays after the funeral. Amen.
3. When a holiday hits hardFather, there's an empty chair at the table today. Help me hold the missing and the thankfulness in the same heart. Amen.
4. When I feel guilty for laughing againGod, I laughed today and then felt ashamed. Teach me that joy is not betrayal — it's proof that love keeps living. Amen.
5. When grief comes out of nowhereLord, a song on the radio undid me. Meet me in the ambush moments. Amen.
6. For someone else who is grievingFather, I don't know what to say to them. Give me the courage to show up anyway, and the wisdom to mostly listen. Amen.
7. When I'm angry at death itselfJesus, You wept at a tomb You were about to empty. I'm weeping at one You will. Come quickly. Amen.
8. At the graveside, laterGod, I came back to the quiet place. Thank You that this ground does not get the last word. Amen.
For Anger

10. When I was wronged and it's realGod, this was unjust and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. You judge rightly — so I'm handing You the gavel I've been swinging. Amen.

12. When I'm angry at GodGod, I'm mad at You. You already knew. Thank You for being big enough to hear it and near enough to stay. Amen.

14. When I need to forgive and can't yetJesus, I can't forgive them today. But I'm willing to be made willing. Start there. Amen.
15. When I'm the one who blew itFather, I was the storm in my house today. Give me the humility to apologize first and fully. Amen.
16. For a slow fuseGod, make me quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger — in that order, starting this morning. Amen.
For Doubt
